Japanese Levels

Level One: 

Welcome to Japanese 1! Japanese 1 covers the following: mastering katakana and hiragana and learning ~50 kanji; developing basic communication skills through Units on Self, Family, Everyday Activities, Seasons and Holidays and Free time. Cultural activities usually include preparing and sampling Japanese food (with chopsticks!), anime, origami, film, music, calligraphy and learning about the geography of Japan.

Level Two:

 

Welcome to Japanese 2! Japanese 2 covers the following: review of hiragana and katakana; continue learning kanji; develop communication skills to use in both formal and informal situations through units on Shopping, Nationalities and Languages, Around Town, Daily Life, and Weather and Seasons.

Welcome to Japanese 3! Japanese 3 will cover the following: continue learning kanji; continue to develop communication skills through units on Hobbies and Leisure, Food, Fashion and Shopping, Travel, and Homes.

Level Four and AP

 

Welcome to Japanese A.P. / Japanese 4 (weighted). Students who take this course are encouraged, but not required, to take the Japanese Advanced Placement exam in May. The course is designed to be equivalent to a college level Japanese class, and students who take the class, whether they take the A.P. test or not, will be confident and prepared to continue studying Japanese in college.

Interested in participating in the Japan Cup?

The Japan Cup is a regional competition that tests students' knowledge of Japanese language and culture. Currently, there are 4 levels of competition: Level 1 - College Level. Every year since the mid-nineties, Boulder High School teams have made the finals of at least one level of the competition. The last several years, the competition has been held in the spring at the University of Denver. All students in Japanese are encouraged to participate in the Japan Cup. It is a fun and rewarding event!
